• Jacksonville Day during this year’s legislative session is set for March 14 and 15 in Tallahassee. The big reception is March 14 at 5 p.m. in the Governors Club and the breakfast is the next morning at 7:30. It’s $100 per person associated with a corporation and $75 for those with nonprofits.
• Court Administrator Britt Beasley is looking for funding for a permanent juror shuttle bus. Beasley would like to buy or lease a vehicle using funding from the Court Facilities Trust Fund. In addition to transporting jurors from the parking lot to the Courthouse, the bus would also be used to transport jurors that have been sequestered to their overnight accommodations.
• Four local women will be recognized for their contributions to the Jacksonville community March 1 at the 21st annual Women’s History Month Breakfast. The event, sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women, will be held at the University of North Florida’s University Center and features keynote speaker Gwendolyn E. Boyd of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The breakfast will start at 7:15 a.m. Tickets are $25 per person. To make reservations or for more information, call 630-1650.
• The Guns and Hoses Chili Cookoff is 3 p.m. March 3 at Fly’s Tie Irish Pub. Guns and Hoses is an annual boxing event pitting members of the city’s fire and police departments against each other on March 10 at the Arena. Proceeds for the cook off will be donated to charity. The public chili tasting starts at 4 p.m.
• The Justice Coalition’s fifth annual “Together We Can” breakfast will be held Thursday at 7:20 a.m. at San Jose Country Club. Speakers will include Sheriff John Rutherford and “Greybeard” Kimber, father of murder victim Kimberli Michelle Kimbler and John Whitten, father of a sex crime victim. Proceeds will go toward the Justice Coalition’s efforts on behalf of victims of violent crimes. For information, call 783-6312.
• The 14th Annual Kiss the Pig for Literacy rally will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at The Corner Brasserie in San Marco. Dr. Edythe Abdullah from Florida Community College at Jacksonville; John Cooper from St. Vincent’s Medical Center; David Lane from CNL Bank; Greg Perrine from JEA; Howard Coker of Coker, Schickel, Sorenson & Daniel; Scott Houser from W.W. Gay, Moses Meide, Jr. of the law Offices of Moses Meide and Dan Scanlan from the Times-Union have all committed to pucker up for a pig this year when students achieve reading goals. The swine will be smooched April 29 at the baseball grounds before the Suns vs. Montgomery Biscuits game.
