• While most City government offices and facilities will be closed Wednesday in observance of the Independence Day holiday, Huguenot Memorial Park’s hours will be extended to allow visitors to view the Mayport fireworks display. The park will close shortly after 10 p.m., at which time all but permitted campers and their authorized visitors must leave.
• Expect to see some specialty paintings in the window of Ann Teague Bail Bonds, Inc. soon. The office, located on East Forsyth Street will take down its current display of paintings by artist Eric Mangia this week to make room for some creations from children at the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless. The work is tentatively scheduled to remain up for the August First Wednesday Art Walk. • If you missed the airing of “Military Appreciation Day” on WFSU The Florida Channel, the station is re-airing the show twice Wednesday, once at 8 a.m. and again at 8 p.m. The presentation will include the programs from 2004-07 and they will be shown in their entirety. “These education programs we, as a body, put together serve as a tangible reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve the military,” said State Rep. • State Attorney candidate and current Chief Assistant State Attorney Jay Plotkin announced Monday that in two weeks of fundraising he’s amassed $80,000. Plotkin entered the race June 14.
• Correction. We misidentified Heather Patterson of the University of North Florida in a photo last week from the Chambers Council luncheon.
• Mayor John Peyton, like most, is off Wednesday, but he won’t be around Thursday, either. He’ll be in Daytona for the Brumos Porsche 250 Road Race.
• Freedom Bail Bonds in the Blackstone Building has moved from its street front space to the sixth floor. They are in suite 620, but the phone number is the same.
• Former City Council member Suzanne Jenkins didn’t stay unemployed long. She and Shirley Dasher, her former executive council assistant, have formed a consulting company called Creative Community Solutions.
• The University of Florida sent out a publication called “The Florida Engineer” and it has an interesting story about Tebow. No, not Gator quarterback Tim Tebow, his older brother Peter who’s in UF’s engineering school.
• Kesler Mentoring Connection is hosting a workshop, “Power of Two! How to Start and Maintain a Mentoring Program” July 19 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at its offices at 9700 Philips Hwy. The workshop is designed to provide organizations with information concerning how to create and effectively administer a one-to-one mentoring program.
