• Attorney Richard Moore is the new president of the San Marco Preservation Society’s board of directors. City planner Valerie Evans is the organization’s vice president.
• The City’s on-line employee newsletter recently won a Golden Image Award from the Florida Public Relations Association. Angela Vigil is the newsletter’s editor.
• The Hutchinson-Suddath Building has been proposed for nomination to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. That proposal will be reviewed by the Florida National Register Review Board July 20. If approved, the nomination will then be sent to the Keeper of the National Register in Washington, D.C. for final approval.
• A Ponte Vedra home is the only property to make the most recent issue of Christie’s Great Estates. It’s a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom, 1,910-square-foot condominium on the beach.
• The Department of Parks, Recreation, Entertainment and Conservation and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will host “Bicycle Rodeo” from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Justina Road Elementary Park. The event, which is free, will teach children about bicycle safety. The first 100 children in attendance will receive a free bicycle helmet.
• U.S. Senator Mel Martinez announced Wednesday that $623,997 in grants will be distributed to the City of Jacksonville and two Volunteers of America of Florida groups — Cocoa Beach and Jacksonville. The grants will be used to support job training programs to help veterans succeed in civilian careers. The grants are provided through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.
• According to Downtown Vision Executive Director Terry Lorince, the July ArtWalk set for Wednesday was canceled because two major stops — the Main Library and MOCA Jacksonville — will be closed and several artists said they planned to be out of town. Lorince said some thought was given to moving it to July 11, but that would be “too confusing” and “massive marketing would have been needed to change the mind set” of ArtWalk being the first Wednesday of every month.
• St. John & Partners walked away with six awards on behalf of its clients at the 28th Annual Telly Awards competition earlier this month. The Telly Awards is a New York-based award show that honors local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions.
• Council member Art Shad’s office sent an e-mail to out-going President Michael Corrigan Wednesday afternoon requesting that Shad be excused from last night’s 2007-2011 Installation Ceremony. When contacted by phone, Shad said he had a family conflict, specifically a cousin’s birthday.
• Jacksonville Children’s Commission Executive Director Linda Lanier has asked City Council President Daniel Davis to reappoint immediate-past Council President Michael Corrigan to the JCC board where he has served for the past year.
