• Riders of JTA transit can now get passes at the UPS Store on Hogan Street a block south of Hemming Plaza. A week of unlimited rides on buses and the Skyway is $12, and $40 for a full calendar month. The idea is to offer riders an option other than the FCCJ-Rosa Parks Station — where most people currently purchase transit passes — since there are plenty of restaurants and retail stores near Hogan and Adams streets.

• The University of North Florida’s Division of Continuing Education will host the Sixth Annual African American Professionals Conference from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The program is designed to meet the career goals and challenges of the African American community in Northeast Florida. The keynote speaker is human capital expert Anthony E. Jones, the author of “Success By Design: Becoming the Person You were Destined To Be.” Other speakers include former Jacksonville Sheriff Nat Glover and talent management consultant Meloney Sally-Dosunmu. For more information, including for sponsorship and exhibitor tables, contact Margaret Hardy at 620-4270 or [email protected].

• Looks like Tiara Shoes & Accessories on Laura Street has closed. The shop was full Monday but was empty Wednesday. On the flip side, a sign where the Firehouse Subs used to be in the Police & Fire Pension Building on Adams Street says Sideline Deli is “coming soon.”

• Members of the Jaguars volunteer committee as well as the Roar were at the Modis Building this week drumming up support for the team and hawking season tickets. A flyer being distributed indicates the least expensive single-game ticket for the 2008-09 season is $55 for seats in 10 upper deck sections. The group will reportedly be back next month.

• March is National Social Work Month, and Florida’s Northeast unit of the National Association of Social Workers is honoring the achievements of its members with the Social Worker of the Year luncheon on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Main Library. For more information, contact Bill Kintz at 396-4846 or [email protected]. “We are rapidly entering the age of no privacy, where everyone is open to surveillance at all times; where there are no secrets from government.”
– Justice William O. Douglas, dissenting, Osborn v. United States, 385 U.S. 341 (1966)
