• To have a discussion about the health of the St. Johns River, you need a varied panel of all ages, professions and interests – which is exactly what The Cummer Museum is putting together. To coincide with its “New View: The Many Faces of the St. Johns River” exhibit, The Cummer is hosting a panel discussion featuring the St. Johns Riverkeeper’s office, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Jacksonville Port Authority and the University of North Florida. The Cummer is also participating in the discussions, which will be held June 3 from 6:30–8 p.m. Admission is free and for more information call 355-0630.
• It’ll cost a little more to play Bent Creek Golf Course, but not much. Kelley Boree, deputy director of the City’s Recreation and Community Services Department, has approved a request from Billy Casper Golf Management to raise the cart fees the course charges from $13 to $14. According to Robert Geppert, southeast regional manager for Casper, the new weekday fee (greens fee and cart) is $39 and the new weekend fee is $49 for the City-owned course.
• The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s recent “Shoot for a Cure” event raised $79,000, beating its goal of $75,000, according to Clockwork Marketing’s Taylor Mueller. The annual fundraising event pitted 35 area companies in a clay pigeon shooting contest.
• June 3, FreshMinistries will mark the sixth graduation class of its Jacksonville Hospitality Institute with an event at the Omni. Brent Orrell, acting assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor, is the keynote speaker.
• Mayor John Peyton will mark Memorial Day by hosting the City’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Wall near the stadium. Pre-ceremony music starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 10 o’clock ceremony.
• Speaking of Peyton, this week he got a book in the mail from Ted Turner. Yes, the Turner who used to own the Atlanta Braves and several national networks. Today, Turner is chair of the Atlanta-based Turner Foundation, an organization founded in 1990 and devoted to preserving wildlife and other environmental issues. The book is called “Plan B 3.0: Mobilization to Save Civilization” by Lester Brown and Turner included a signed letter of endorsement.
• Kent Olson, The City’s budget officer, was elected director of the Florida Government Finance Officers Association. He has been a member of the organization for 14 years.
