Recently admitted attorneys got a chance to socialize and learn from area judges Wednesday at the Duval County Courthouse.

The Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the Jacksonville Bar Association hosted a judicial breakfast in Chief Circuit Court Judge Donald Moran’s chambers Wednesday morning. There was a mixture of attorneys in attendance with some employed by firms and others opening their own offices.

“It helps young lawyers develop a sense of camaraderie with other young lawyers and judges who they haven’t appeared before,” said Kirby Oberdorfer, YLS chair of its judicial relations committee. “The events also promote collegiality and professionalism among bar members.”

The event presents a unique opportunity for young lawyers to talk to judges in a social setting, but it also provides a venue for them to talk about the experience they are having at the beginning of their careers.

“It’s good for judges to be there, but its also good to develop a networking atmosphere,” said Oberdorfer. “It helps young lawyers connect with peers who are going through the same experiences.”

The recent breakfast included Circuit Criminal Court and Duval County judges. The next breakfast, March 25, will feature Circuit Civil judges and the following, June 24, will host Circuit Probate, Family and Juvenile Court judges. The breakfasts are held on Wednesdays at 8 a.m.

The YLS is also planning a luncheon with U.S. Federal Court Judges in December.
