For the Salvation Army of Northeast Florida, Friday marked the beginning of two longtime annual traditions as the organization kicked off its 2008 Red Kettle/Angel Tree Drive with a ceremony at the Avenues Mall.

Even in uncertain economic times, officials from the organization have high hopes – $750,000 collected from the region, up from the $570,000-ranged goal last year – but Major Jim Arrowood, Northeast Florida area commander, said he is confident the goal can be reached.

Keynote speaker for the kickoff celebration Brian Sexton, Ch. 30/47 sports director, began by recalling holiday memories of his youth to express his admiration for the organization.

“It’s one of those memories of Christmas we all remember,” said Sexton, pointing to the kettle. “The Salvation Army is all about helping people. The unbelievable places they go and things they do to help people is amazing.”

Throughout the program, speakers stressed the need for more volunteers to aid in the organization’s bell ringing and collection efforts.

A first for the Salvation Army of Northeast Florida, this year the nonprofit has enlisted the help of area churches for bell ringers. To date, people from 39 churches have volunteered their services, according to Public Relations Coordinator Jill Black.

Combined with area businesses who have enlisted so far, the Salvation Army of Northeast Florida will have the assistance of 60 area businesses and churches.

Still, the need is there, said event speaker Charles Towers, chairman of the Red Kettle Committee.

“It’s so easy to do,” said Towers to the crowd, “and it makes a difference. When change goes in, change really does come out.”

Mike Buresh, Ch. 30/47 chief meteorologist, was master of ceremonies for the kickoff. His daughter, Willa, made the first donation in the ceremonial red kettle.

Another speaker, Christmas Committee Chair Tom Lee, gave the audience a little prodding to further the organization’s goal of serving people in need, especially for the holiday season.

“Give early, give often and become involved,” he said.
