• The “best burger special” is back at London Bridge Pub at 100 E. Adams St. Summer hours robbed downtown carnivores of their cheap lunchtime fix, but now the $6.95 special is back on Tuesdays. The special includes a burger, chips and iced tea. The pub and eatery is now open at 11 a.m. for lunch and the kitchen shuts down at 2 p.m to switch over for the dinner menu, which starts at 4 p.m.
• Maybe by then the federal economic bailout plan will be finalized: U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw will speak at a luncheon Oct. 16 at the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University. Hosted by the Economic Roundtable of Jacksonville, Crenshaw will present a “Congressional report card” and answer questions from the public at the event. For ticket information, call 256-7188.
• Mayor John Peyton has received a letter from the American Medical Association asking for nominations for the 2009 Dr. Nathan Davis Awards for Outstanding Government Service. In its 20th year, the awards honor elected officials and government employees for outstanding service that advances public health.
• Mayor mail part two: Peyton also received a note from David Hankla of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that lavished kudos on a company doing some work on the Northbank Riverwalk. After a manatee protection buoy broke loose last week, the Service received extensive assistance recovering and re-securing the buoy – a timely process – from contractor Misener Marine Construction and completed the task quickly, said Hankla.
• From hotel room to the classroom: Hyatt owner Dan King will be participating in the “Jumpstart’s Read for the Record!” program in support of early childhood education. King will be reading Thursday to students at John Love Elementary School. The reading campaign has a goal to have thousands of children and adults nationwide read the same book, “Corduroy,” in an attempt to break the world record and highlight early reading.
• If you see a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer in uniform and he or she is wearing a purple ribbon, it’s to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The ribbons were handed out yesterday by Sheriff John Rutherford and Hubbard House.
