Women lawyers of Jacksonville met Wednesday afternoon to get some tips on how to help their practices succeed.

The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association hosted Doug Wilder of Wilder Success at River City Brewing Company to gain his insights on “Marketing for Lawyers.”

“You need to find out what makes you unique,” said Wilder, a business coach. “Your strengths might not be sports, golf or entertaining clients at a Jaguars game. Some may try to fake it, but if you can’t, don’t. Focus on your strengths and what makes you unique.”

This statement was in response to a question about how a woman can network with potential clients when they aren’t golfers or know a lot about sports.

Wilder also provided some networking tips. One of them involved proper placement of a name tag when attending an event. Placing a name tag high and to the right gets more notice and helps people remember the name because it is the first place they look after shaking hands.

Most people shake hands with their right hand and it is natural for eyes to look at the hand and then progress upward to make eye contact with the person that is being greeted, Wilder said.

The JWLA will host Travis Cox of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office during its November luncheon and the topic will be “The Legal Use of Tasers.”
