• Attorney Shands Wulbern of the law firm Henrichsen Siegel has filed suit against the City on behalf of the family of Addar Kennedy. The suit claims Kennedy “was wrongfully shot and killed” by officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Feb. 8, 2008 in Atlantic Beach. Wulbern does not specify the monetary damages he’s seeking.
• The last scheduled meeting of the Jacksonville Journey Oversight Committee is set for Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. in the Ed Ball Building. Thursday’s meeting has been canceled.
• Orange Park is getting on the farmers and arts market bandwagon. Beginning Oct. 3 locally grown produce, baked goods and art of all types will be for sale every Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. rain or shine in the parking lot at Orange Park Mall between Sears and Blanding Boulevard.
• The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is scheduling appointments for auditions Wednesday, Thursday and Aug. 24. The mission of the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is to provide high-quality choral music education for children of diverse backgrounds, fostering teamwork, self-discipline, accomplishment and pride while filling an important cultural need in the community and sharing the beauty of the choral art form through artistically excellent performances. • Harold Bergman is turning 106 this year and will be celebrating at his favorite lunch spot. For many years Bergman and his wife Lillian have been having lunch at the McDonald’s on Beach Boulevard near San Pablo Road. He always orders one of his favorites, the Filet-O-Fish sandwich with extra mayonnaise. Thursday, Ronald McDonald will surprise Bergman with a cake shaped like his favorite sandwich. The public is invited to the party which begins at 11:30 a.m.
• The deadline to submit an application to the Jacksonville Regional Political Leadership Institute is Aug. 28. Members of the business community who would like to explore the possibility of one day becoming an elected official are encouraged to apply. The PLI features a Leadership School with national and regional experts in political campaigning, public issues and leadership; issues briefings throughout the year; and a mentoring program that connects participants with local business leaders to open doors for networking. • Sunrise Senior Living will introduce its newest community to the Jacksonville area next month. Sunrise of Jacksonville, located at 4870 Belfort Rd., can accommodate about 90 residents in approximately 50 assisted living suites and nearly 30 memory care units. Sunrise operates nine other senior communities in the state. The McLean, Va.-based company employs approximately 40,000 people and operates 415 communities in the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom with a combined unit capacity of approximately 42,750 units.
