Annual FOP party helps children celebrate season
The Fraternal Order of Police helped spread a little holiday cheer to close to 200 special guests Wednesday during its 61st annual Christmas party for children with special needs at the Fairgrounds.
The only thing more abundant than the many planned events were the smiles on both the childrens’ and volunteers’ faces, a sight that’s never failed, said event organizer Vic Groner.
“It’s been a great event for so many years,” he added. “It’s always been about the kids, but the people who help put this on each year enjoy it, too. It’s a chance for them (FOP members) to forget all the stuff they see on the streets for a day and take a moment to give back.”
The children attend Sabal Palm, Mandarin Oaks, Biltmore, Pinedale, Southside Estates, Fishweir, Love Grove, West View and Biscayne elementary schools between pre-kindergarten through through third grade and have visual, auditory or orthopedic disabilities.
“The kids look forward to it all year,” said Jenny Carr, a physical disorder specialist with Duval County Public Schools. “When they’re riding in and escorted by the motorcycles with their flashing lights, they feel like royalty.”
Which is exactly the goal FOP members are trying to achieve with the celebration, said FOP President Nelson Cuba.
“It’s all about them and we do what we can to make them smile,” said Cuba. “We love it. Many of the officers participate once then they’re hooked each year. We have people who retired long ago but come back each year to help.”
Activities included a sing-a-long with vocals provided by the guests of honor, hands-on opportunities with cars, motorcycles and a police horse and a visit from Santa Claus, who bestowed each child with a personal gift.
Officer Robbie Freitas was one of the ones helping during the festivities, showing children the ins-and-outs of a promotional FOP car donated by Subaru.
“It’s just a great day,” said Freitas. “Everyone enjoys it.”
