The City has installed a solar-powered trash can on the Northbank Riverwalk near the foot of Newnan Street. The “Big Belly Solar Compactor” compresses whatever is deposited into it with a low-voltage motor powered by the sun and even catches rainwater to make the job more efficient. According to the company’s Web site, owners of the device save money because the receptacle doesn’t have to be emptied as often, lowering collection costs. “Big Belly” also qualifies for points toward LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. There are also a few at the Landing.
