How did you get involved?

After moving to Jacksonville, one of my first priorities was to get involved in pro bono work, which led to my service on the board of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid for four years. I also wanted to get involved in the community outside of the legal world, and was fortunate to be nominated for “Blueprint for Leadership” through Volunteer Jacksonville. After graduation from the “Blueprint Program,” I was placed as an intern on the board of Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. (JCCI). My involvement with JCCI led me to become chair of its 2006 study “Attracting and Retaining Talent: People and Jobs for the 21st Century.” During this time, other opportunities to get involved presented themselves through the many other volunteers I met.

Why did you get involved?

Community involvement has always been important to me. Therefore, it was a necessary and natural part of my move to Jacksonville to seek out opportunities to make a contribution to our City.

What have you learned/achieved through the experience?

Through my experiences, I not only learned about our community, but at the same time, I improved my skills as a lawyer through opportunities to hone my analytical abilities and presentation skills. I also learned that if you make a difference in one person’s life, you can make a lifetime of difference for yourself.

What was the last book you read or are reading?

I am currently reading “Outliers: The Story of Success” by Malcolm Gladwell.
