1. It’s primarily a social network.

While the various networks have strong business applications, the field was started by college kids to communicate with each other. If you’re in it for business, make sure you don’t get lured into a gabfest and waste time.

2. It’s easy to get into.

The internet is often overwhelming but that doesn’t apply to these sites. They’re easy to find, easy to join and easy to work.

3. There’s a lot there.

Start slowly but, when you feel you’re comfortable, start looking deeper into the things you can do with the sites. All have a ‘Help’ function and the internet and the bookstore can provide more information.

4. Remember that you can’t see who you’re communicating with.

Just because they’re in your group doesn’t mean they’re a friend. Be cautious in your dealings, just as you would be cautious with a stranger you meet.

5. Don’t divulge private information.

Data theft is one of the internet’s problems. Don’t make it easy for someone by handing it to them.

6. Pick the sites that apply to you.

You have a number of choices. Some people feel comfortable with Facebook, others don’t like it. Twitter is perfect for some, a waste of time for others. Look at everything.

7. Facebook is fine; face time is important, too.

Digital networking is just one arrow in your quiver and don’t ignore the others. Phone calls and letters, brochures and newsletters, web pages and signs, and everything else you need to have a well-rounded marketing effort.

8. You’re giving everyone a chance to judge you.

Just as first impressions are very important and continuing impressions are important, the way you handle yourself in business networking tells people about you. Be on your best behavior.

9. Don’t jump into every gimmick that pops up.

Social/business networking is still a developing way of communicating. With the tremendous popularity, and with the ability to adapt the internet, there will be new applications coming on line all the time. before you jump to the latest, remember that it might be a fad and that you might be leaving a tried-and-true method behind.

10. Do what’s best for you.

Everyone thinks they’re an expert and gladly will dispense a lot of advice. Listen, but make your own considered decision. Despite the popularity of all the sites, it’s still a new field and a lot of “experts” aren’t much more experienced that you are.
