• The tournament was in April, but the Jacksonville Police Softball Club won the 30th Annual Rick Hall Memorial Tournament when it beat the Ohio Lawmen 39-10 in the open division title game at Wingate Park. Overall, 32 teams played in the tournament that honors former JSO officer Rick Hall, a vice detective who passed away in 1989. According to Robbie Frietas, tournament coordinator, this year’s version was the last.
• “Improv Effect” presents a “Summer Night of Laughs” June 18 in the theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville. The comedy troupe will take the stage at 8 p.m. Admission is $8 for museum members, $10 for non-members and before the show you can get a beverage at Cafe Nola and take it into the theater.
• The northern portion of Penman Road at the Beach Boulevard intersection will be closed to perform complete pavement reconstruction next week from Tuesday-Friday. The pavement reconstruction involves excavating 23 inches of roadway material under Penman Road and replacing it with new stabilizer and asphalt. Due to the depth of cut, and the amount of asphalt required for the job, performing the operation on a lane-by-lane basis would take weeks and create a much more detrimental impact on the motorists, according to JTA. Detour signs will direct motorists during the project.
• Holding off on lunch could be financially beneficial for pizza fans. The Pizza Palace in San Marco is offering a buy-one-get-one-free slice of pizza special from 2-3 p.m.
• NAS Jacksonville will cut the ribbon on Hangar 1122 June 30 at 11 a.m. The new hangar will service the U.S. Navy Helicopter Maritime Strike Force.
• Jacksonville Beach kicks off its first Summer Jazz Series Sunday. The music starts at 5 p.m. at the Sea Walk Pavilion.
• Can’t make it to the Farmer’s Market at Hemming Plaza from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday? A new option will be available at the St. Johns Town Center, which will host a Farmers and Arts Market every Friday from 3-8 p.m. behind Dick’s Sporting Goods beginning this Friday.
• The 2009 City Council Appreciation Luncheon is June 23 at the Wyndham on the Southbank. The event is being hosted by the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce to recognize the work of City Council President Ronnie Fussell and Council members. • National “Get Outdoors Day” is Saturday and the Get Outdoors Florida!
