• Michael Fattizzi and Ashley Miles are the newest members of the Firehouse Subs marketing team. As regional marketing managers they will support local marketing initiatives, coordinate and plan grand openings and assist in all other marketing needs. Fattizzi worked as a firefighter in New Jersey for 16 years before retiring as a Captain. His previous job was divisional marketing manager for Starbucks in the Southeast. Ashley Miles most recently worked as a media planner with St. John & Partners in Jacksonville on accounts such as Zaxby’s and Smoothie King.
• The World Golf Hall of Fame will be offering two special discounts for the summer: a $10 admission for Florida and Georgia residents and free admission for U.S. military and reserve members from across the country. • Jacksonville Jazz Festival pioneer Mike Tolbert will present a “Jazz Talk” Wednesday at Snyder Memorial Church. Tolbert helped produce the first five Jacksonville Jazz Festivals and introduced the Great American Jazz Piano Competition to the festival. He also played a key role in the agreement that led to the national and international telecast of the festival on PBS for seven years and in 1999 Tolbert was inducted into the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame. The program begins at noon and admission is free.
• The Florida Theatre is bringing back its Summer Movie Classics series of programs beginning June 21, showcasing such hits as “Cool Hand Luke,” “The King and I,” and “Dr Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” Showtime for the 9-week series begins at 2 p.m., with tickets at $7 for single admission or $40 for a movie card, which will get viewers any 10 screenings. • JEA has received the American Public Power Association’s electric utility safety award for safe operating practices in 2008. The publicly-owned electric and water utility won the first place award for utilities with more than four million worker-hours and with a 1.02 Recordable Incident rate (RIR) for the calendar year. The RIR is calculated based upon an organization’s number of work-related incidents and hours that are worked, as defined by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. JEA has also been recognized by the Florida Water Environment Association as the top municipal water and wastewater utility in the state for operational excellence. JEA is the eighth largest municipal electric utility in the United States and provides electric, water and sewer service to more than 875,000 accounts in Northeast Florida.
• In celebration of National Preservation Month, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission will honor 18 projects and services at their annual awards ceremony May 21 at 6 p.m. at the Main Library. Some of the projects and people receiving awards this year include the Historic Sites Survey of the St. Nicholas Neighborhood, the exterior restorations of the Woman’s Club of Jacksonville located in Riverside and the Richard Norman Studios in Arlington. Among the individuals being honored are City Council Members Glorious Johnson and Warren Jones for their contributions toward the restoration of the Brewster Hospital.
