The Leadership Jacksonville 2010 class includes 56 members of the legal, business, education, law enforcement and volunteer communities. Past graduates of the program include Mayor John Peyton, former Mayor John Delaney, Circuit Judge Mallory Cooper and Sheriff John Rutherford. The new class was invited to a reception at WJCT’s studios last Thursday to get to know their classmates and listen to organization leaders and alumni.

“What you go through during this program will be a life changer,” said Steve Canty, president-elect of the Leadership Jacksonville Board of Directors. “You will be challenged. You will see our beautiful city through a different set of lenses.”

Applications were accepted until January and 112 were submitted.

“We were a little below average this year. We usually receive between 120-140 applications,” said Barbra Moulding, adult program coordinator. “We strive for a mix of people from all different backgrounds to represent the diversity of the community.”

The Leadership Jacksonville program consists of nine day-long programs, an opening reception, opening dinner and a pair of two-day retreats.

“I’m excited to be a part of this group,” said Patty Adeeb, executive director of Florida Community College at Jacksonville’s Deerwood Campus. “There is so much talent in this room. I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”

Selection criteria includes demonstrated or emerging leadership skills, active involvement in the community and a willingness to invest the time and energy required by the program. Each class is selected by a committee of alumni volunteers through evaluation of nominations, completed applications and interviews.

Tuition for the program is $3,000. Scholarship assistance is available for those individuals for whom the tuition would prevent them from participating in the program.

Leadership Jacksonville was created in 1976 to cultivate leadership in the Jacksonville Community. The Junior League of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and the Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. (JCCI) contributed to the creation of the program along with the program’s first president, Fred Schultz. The first class in 1977 consisted of 29 members.
