People who live in Jacksonville have been bringing their shoes to Gus and Company Downtown for new soles and other repairs since 1904. Greg Vacarro took over the business 11 years ago and has maintained all the old-fashioned traditions. One of those traditions is the filing system. “We put the customer’s last name and their phone number on the repair ticket because two people might have the same name but they won’t have the same phone number,” said Vacarro. “This system was designed long before computers and it works just as well if not better.” The shop has also been for more than a century a gathering place for Jacksonville’s elected officials and business leaders who come in for a shoe shine and some conversation. “We get everybody in here from homeless people to senators,” said Vaccaro. “Everybody has shoes and the ones that don’t have shoes, I’ll give them a pair that wasn’t picked up by whoever dropped them off.”
