• The hot-topic measure of session, SB 6, regarding teacher merit pay, was approved by both the Senate and the House last week but still sits on Gov. Charlie Crist’s desk awaiting action. Crist has until Friday to sign the bill.
• Update: A measure that would provide legislative intent to recognize student academic achievement comparable to National Signing Day for high-school football players is making its way through the process. The measure, SB 206 and sponsored by Sen. Tony Hill, was placed on the Special Order Calendar for tomorrow. It would provide for “Academic Scholarship Signing Day” on the third Tuesday every April.
• A measure regarding communications of threats of death or to unlawfully do bodily injury to a person also is making moves. The measure, HB 317 and sponsored by State Rep. Janet Adkins, amends state statute 836.10 relating to threats and passed Tuesday’s Criminal & Civil Justice Policy Council.
• Citizens Property Insurance, the state-created property insurer, is doing better than ever, according to an official speaking to the governor and Cabinet on Tuesday. Sharon Binnum, Citizens CFO, said market improvements and the lackluster hurricane seasons leave the organization able to handle all but the most catastrophic storms. She said it has a $3.9 billion surplus and $11 billion in cash and incentives. Hurricane season begins June 1.
