Twenty-one years of service celebrated at retirement ceremony

“It was on that spot that I stood and took the oath of office almost 21 years ago to the day,” said Circuit Court Judge Michael Weatherby at his retirement ceremony Thursday in Courtroom No. 4 of the Duval County Courthouse.

The ceremonial courtroom was full to the brim with family, friends and colleagues who wanted to see the former thespian’s last curtain call. Weatherby’s wife, Paula, and daughter, Courtney, helped pull that curtain down from the portrait made of Weatherby to commemorate his retirement. It will be hung in his former Courtroom, No. 5. He finished his full-time career as the Administrative Judge for the Criminal Division and has served previously in the Civil and Family Divisions. Prior to taking office, Weatherby served 12 years as an Assistant State Attorney and five years in private practice. He also served his country, retiring as a Lt. Col., Military Police, of the U.S. Army Reserve.

“The word that describes Michael is service,” said Robert Willis, a friend and colleague asked to speak at the ceremony. “He has served all of his life. He has served his country, served his community and raised a wonderful family.”

The praise did not stop there as former Florida Bar President Hank Coxe stepped to the podium and described Weatherby.

“He has reminded us of the warmth of Dorothy Pate, the wisdom and patience of Lou Safer, the commitment to justice of Buddy Nimmons and the fairness of Major Harding,” said Coxe.

Weatherby returned the praise during his turn at the podium.

“This has been the most fun job anyone could ever have. I was given the opportunity to work with some of the best lawyers in the state,” said Weatherby. “I’ve been able to chuckle at times and I’ve had my guts wrenched from one side to the other. I hope that I have imparted a positive influence on some of the young lawyers that I’ve met throughout my career.”
