Workspace: Alhambra owner Craig Smith
From the sound system and sparkled library walls to the cuisine and exterior color, much has changed for the Alhambra Dinner Theater in recent months.
The last year saw turbulent financial times that resulted in the historic dinner theater — one of only a handful remaining in the country — briefly shut its doors. It was brief, though, due to the work of local businessman Craig Smith, who dove into the business venture he frequently visited and loved as a child.
“I wanted my children and my children’s children to be able to come here and experience and enjoy the show like I have for so long,” said Smith, in an earlier interview.
The contract was finalized for Smith to purchase the Alhambra late last year, but simply reopening the doors wouldn’t do. Instead, Smith wanted to make it better.
New decor both inside and out, table settings, different food, the return of the rolling stage and much more were added, with Smith adding to the transformation in ways that aren’t just physical.
The result, in its more than a month since reopening, has been noticeable to longtime patrons and those who have stopped in to see the makeover.
“It’s been amazing, but we’re not done yet,” said Smith. “We’re going to keep going and continue to give people a memorable experience when they come in.”
Ideally, Smith said he’d fashion the establishment like a private club — not in the expenses needed to enjoy the show, but rather the personal treatment to cater to regulars when they walk in the door.
Subtle additions like the “fond farewell,” where cast members line up at the doors to personally thank audience members for coming to the show and wishing them well and the return of the rolling, retractable stage have been “huge hits” said Smith.
“I’m living the dream and fulfilling a fantasy,” said Smith. “I never thought I’d be in this position ... but like I’ve said before I’m not in it to make a big profit ... as long as it doesn’t lose money, it’s a winner in my book.”
This year’s show schedule has 10 shows and include the current production, “High School Musical,” running through March, followed by productions such as “42nd Street,” “Amorous Crossing,” “The Wedding Singer,” “Cinderella,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” For a full schedule and information on the Alhambra, go to www.alhambrajax.com
