• Visit Jacksonville expects to make an offer to a new president and CEO the week of Aug. 23-27, the organization said Monday. John Reyes, former president and CEO, resigned March 19 for a position in California. A search committee said the replacement process began June 1.
• Meninak Club President Kent Lindsey told members Monday to never criticize a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes. “That way, when you do criticize him, you’ll be a mile away and you’ll have his shoes,” he explained.
• Attorney Jane Lester, law clerk for U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan, will join U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard’s office Aug. 2. Law clerk Benjamin Rose is leaving Howard’s office and relocating to New York.
• To follow up on Monday’s report about attorney Ernst Mueller being awarded the Justice Raymond Ehrlich Trial Advocacy Award, he joins a group of past winners that includes attorneys James E. Cobb, William H. Maness, Alan Chipperfield, Albert J. Datz, Gary Pajcic, Robert Spohrer and Robert J. Beckham.
• Duval County Public Schools recently honored Khaydrea Burton of Paxon School for Advanced Studies and Derek Smith of First Coast High School for their perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade.
• The fourth annual Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities Conference will be Thursday at the Main Library. Sessions are scheduled for agencies and vendors 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and individuals and their caregivers are invited 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The conference is free and open to the public and lunch will be provided. • Jacksonville Elks Lodge No. 221 will host its annual Public Flag Day Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Elks Lodge Room at 1855 West Road, near Beach Boulevard and Hogan Road. This year’s ceremony will honor the memory of Army Spc. William Joshua Rechenmacher, who was killed in Iraq in 2007. Guest speaker will be James E. Hurst Jr., Florida Elks Association State President, Jacksonville native and retired administrator with the Duval County Public School System.
• In honor of Memorial Day, Gov. Charlie Crist signed House Bill 1145 providing a 25 percent discount on annual passes to Florida State Parks. Effective July 1, honorably discharged veterans, active-duty service and reserve members will receive a 25 percent discount on the purchase of a Florida State Park annual pass. The discount provides savings of $15 on an individual annual pass and $30 on a family annual pass, which allows up to eight people in a group to access most of Florida’s 160 state parks. In addition, honorably discharged veterans who have service-connected disabilities and surviving spouses of military members killed in combat can receive a lifetime family annual pass at no charge.
