The Food Network’s Guy Fieri visited six local eateries for his television show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” in February and Atlantic Beach’s Culhane’s Irish Pub was the latest to show off its fare. The episode “Comfort Food with Attitude” ran Monday and Tuesday night. Singleton’s Seafood Shack, episode “Surf n’ Turf,” and 13 Gypsies, “Globetrottin,” have also been featured. Fieri also filmed at Sun Dog Diner, Metro Diner and The Fox Restaurant. Fieri’s blog stated that the footage would air throughout the summer, so keep an eye on the Food Network.
• Attorneys Craig Gibbs of the Law Offices of Craig Gibbs, Barbara Johnston of McGuireWoods, Michael Korn of Korn & Zehmer and Michael Tanner of Tanner Bishop have been nominated by the Florida Bar Board of Governors to fill two vacancies on the First District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission. The Commission reviews applicants for seats on the First District Court of Appeal and submits a list of applicants to the governor.
• Downtown Straight Up!, Downtown Vision Inc.’s monthly happy hour, is held on the second Thursday each month at different bars in the Downtown core. The June edition starts at 5:30 p.m. today at London Bridge Eatery & Pub at 11 E. Adams St.
• The Florida Bar Board of Governors has nominated Jacksonville attorneys Henry “Chip” Bachara of the Bachara Law Group, David Barksdale of the Bedell Firm, Scott Cairns of McGuireWoods, Hugh Cotney, Robert Spohrer of Spohrer & Dodd and Wesley Poole of Poole & Poole, Fernandina Beach, for two seats on the Fourth Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission.
• The City’s Recreation and Community Services Department’s Waterfront Management and Programming Division closed about 550 feet of the beach to vehicular traffic at Huguenot Memorial Park. The action is meant to protect birds nesting and foraging in the northern part of the park’s beach. All wildlife in the park is protected by the Jacksonville Ordinance Code, Sec. 28.818 which states: “Hunting or disturbing animals is prohibited. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to hunt or disturb in any manner any of the fish, water fowl, birds, reptiles or any animals whatsoever present in, belonging to or preserved in any park or other recreational facility.”
• During the past several months, Landmark Middle School students raised more than $3,000 for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The students presented a check to Pastor John Wyatt of Celebration Church who accepted the donation on behalf of organizations working in Haiti. The young philanthropists raised the money through several student-run efforts that included a “penny war” collection, the sale of spirit bracelets and the “Help Lift Haiti Up” fundraiser, during which student athletes collected pledges based on how much weight they could lift.
