Work continues on the sidewalks in Avondale as the Town Center renovations take shape. The Avondale Town Center is the commercial district along St. Johns Avenue between Talbot Avenue and Dancy Street. Avondale took root in 1920 when investors led by Telfair Stockton bought land to develop into an exclusive neighborhood. The area was designated a local historic district in 1998. Town Center plans call for new sidewalks, curbing, lighting, crosswalks, trees, traffic signals and other features. Avondale is one of 17 areas in the City’s Town Center Progam, with total funding for each up to $1 million, to renew older areas of the city. The Avondale improvements should be completed by November.
