Sandy Myers is returning to her San Marco business roots with a concept one doesn’t often find in trendy clothing magazines or television fashion shows.

It’s an idea she believes will have a plus-size market.

On April 1, Myers will launch her newest endeavor, My Best Friend’s Closet, a consignment clothing shop geared toward women who wear a size 14 or greater.

She considers it an untapped market. The economy has drawn more women to clothing consignment stores, but fuller-figured women have had fewer options.

“Nowadays, people are looking at consignment shops to get a deal,” said Myers. “There’s a treasure hunt factor in it and it’s fun. And not all women fit into a size 0.”

Myers is looking forward to returning to the retail trade after selling her longtime business, tobacco and gift shop, Edward’s of San Marco, several years ago to spend time with her parents. My Best Friend’s Closet will be at 2002 San Marco Blvd., not far from Edward’s.

“I’m very familiar with the area and the people,” she said.

“I really did miss the relationships. I’m looking forward to getting back to it.”

Myers also looks forward to experiencing the differences in a new venture.

“There will be a learning process but it really is a people business,” she said.

She’s gained early support from friends and network associates like those in Women Business Owners of North Florida. Vicky Zelen of Zelen Risk Solutions believes the business will take off because of its concept and Myers’ entrepreneurial history.

“She has a lot of experience,” said Zelen. “She’s not just a person with an idea. She’s been there before and made it succeed.”

Zelen intends to patronize the store. “It’s a great place to have,” she said. “So many women changes sizes for different reasons and there aren’t a lot of places out there for them.”

In addition to running the store, Myers plans to host events such as community walks and she intends to donate unsold clothes to Hubbard House.

“I want to be more than just a business,” she said.

Myers plans to host a preview opening March 27-28. While she has inventory on hand, she is looking for additional items, especially in sizes 20 and above.

“We’re always looking,” she said, “and I can’t wait to get started.”
