• The Jacksonville Aviation Authority and AirTran Airways celebrate the airline’s inaugural flight today from Jacksonville International Airport to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The first flight departs at 4 p.m. AirTran will offer two daily flights from Jacksonville to Baltimore. Southwest Airlines already offers three Baltimore flights a day.
• Almost 1,500 schoolchildren will sing “Happy Birthday” to the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra today in celebration of its 60th anniversary. Today is the final installment of the “Prelude Concerts” for students and the sing-along is at the end.
• There’s a lot of thought taking place today by members of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors who will meet at UNF in a planning retreat. They are asked to sign on to one of five initiatives: Retaining the Jaguars; revitalizing downtown; addressing current affairs; developing small businesses; or enhancing chamber member value.
• The City’s Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Commission is launching its 2010 campaign to help reduce cigarette butt litter with a litter scan and installation of new ash receptacles today around the Ed Ball Building Downtown as well as the 2700 block of St. Johns Avenue and the 2500 block of Riverside Avenue. A second scan June 29 will determine if there has been a decrease in the amount of related litter.
