• The deadline for nominations for the Robert O. Johnson Good Government Award is 5 p.m. Friday. The recipient of the award personifies outstanding public service, integrity and honesty. It is named for Bob Johnson, who served as City Council Auditor for more than 25 years and won the first award in 2003. The annual award is given to a City employee. Nominations may be dropped off at the Office of City Council at City Hall or by contacting Jeff Clements at [email protected].
• Mayor John Peyton will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday at the Veterans Memorial Wall. It starts at 10 a.m.
• Former Atlantic Beach Mayor Bill Gulliford has filed to run for City Council. He’s seeking Art Graham’s Dist. 13 seat.
• Thursday morning, the Sulzbacher Center will celebrate the grand opening of its new outdoor dining area for homeless men, women and children. The picnic tables were bought with a $10,000 grant from Publix Charities. In the past 12 months, the center has provided 463,456 meals, an increase of 42,423 meals from the previous 12-month period.
• City Council can expect to hear from area brokers and developers about the City’s proposed deal for Texas-based Hillwood to develop Cecil Commerce Center. The Northeast Florida chapter of the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association issued a statement Tuesday, saying while it supports the City’s policy objectives for more jobs and a higher tax base, “many of our members ... have expressed their concern that the transaction may not accomplish those policy objectives. Further, they have expressed their intent to become involved in this issue through the legislative process.”
