Convergys plans 900 jobs

Convergys Corp. said Tuesday it plans to hire about 900 customer services and sales workers in Jacksonville.

Candidates are invited to two information sessions — at 10 a.m. and at noon — Saturday at the Convergys offices at 8000 Baymeadows Way.

Convergys did not identify the client but said it was a company in the telecommunications industry.

“Expanding business at our contact center has enabled us to provide additional employment opportunities for local job seekers,” said Robin Cheshire, site leader for the Convergys facility in Jacksonville.

“We’re looking for customer service-driven candidates with sales experience to handle customer calls and provide information on client products and services,” Cheshire said in a news release.

“In addition to hiring front-line customer service and sales representatives, we also have opportunities for supervisors. These positions require candidates to have contact center and/or sales management experience,” said Cheshire.

Convergys said it offers comprehensive training, competitive wages, performance incentives, benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, tuition reimbursement, 401(k) plans, and paid and unpaid time off.

Spokeswoman Amy Williams said starting pay is $10 an hour, but can range up to $13.50 an hour.

Candidates should have customer service and sales experience, computer and keyboarding skills, and the ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings. 

Convergys said employment also is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and drug screening.

Convergys, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, has about 70,000 employees in 68 customer contact centers and other centers in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Its website lists job openings in Jacksonville for positions that include call center supervisor of sales operations and customer service sales associate.

The supervisor position is described as full time and it requires a year of sales management experience, six months of call center experience and a year of supervisory experience.

It asks for associates degrees in a related field or advanced vocational training with 2-4 years of related experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent with three or more years of related work experience. It said telephone sales and sales management experience is preferred.

The description also requests “highly persuasive communication skills with the ability to convey information orally over the phone and face to face.”

It said candidates must be proficient with software applications include email, Microsoft Word and Excel.

The customer service sales associate positions are described as full time and candidates must be able to work within the hours of 7 a.m.-midnight Monday-Sunday. Shifts vary and could rotate weekly.

Previous sales experience is required.

The job description is to “interface with customers via inbound or outbound calls or the Internet for the purpose of actively selling products and services. Responsibilities include processing customer orders and sales, providing and receiving various information and up-selling client products plus handling miscellaneous customer service and general information calls via the phone or Internet.”

It asks for a high school diploma or equivalent experience.
