JBA Special Needs of Children Committee Chairs Connie Byrd and Jodi Seitlin
Each one of us is involved in the most important work being done today – ensuring that our children have an opportunity to grow.
Children are entitled to an opportunity to build a future filled with possibilities. Unfortunately, many children never get that opportunity because they are deprived of the resources necessary to build that future.
They may lack the proper nurturing to get the education they will need to succeed. Maybe they lack the resources to get the proper medical, psychological or emotional care and support. In some cases, getting help is simply a matter of knowing what to ask for or where to go for help.
Educating parents, professionals, and others who come in contact with children in need is one way to make a difference, and that is the focus of the March 3 Jacksonville Bar Association Special Needs of Children Committee’s “Meeting the Special Needs of Children as Client: Health, Education and Welfare” CLE.
It is a half-day program for attorneys, educators, social workers, medical care providers, and those others who come in contact with children with education, health, and welfare needs. It is designed to provide a basic understanding of the law as it applies to children with special needs.
The program will be held from 1:30-5 p.m. at the Aetna Building, 841 Prudential Drive.
Featured speakers will include Circuit Judge Karen Cole, Florida Coastal School of Law Professors Rebekah Gleason and Sarah Sullivan, Dr. Bev Brown, and attorneys Vicki Bowers, Rebecca Berg and Rebecca Tulipan.
More information about the program can be found at www.jaxbar.org. The program is open to lawyers and non-lawyers, and special pricing is available for students and non-lawyers.
We encourage you to participate in one of several ways:
• Attend the program, or send someone from your organization.
This is an excellent opportunity to not only learn more about the law, but to meet and network with other professionals who work in this area. Attendees will include attorneys, social workers, educators, health care providers, and many others who either represent children and need to find resources or are resource providers trying to connect with those in need.
• Provide resource materials for distribution.
If you are an organization or agency providing services for children with special needs in the areas of health, education, or welfare, you are invited to provide resource materials to hand out to participants. The materials will be made available throughout the program. Additionally, we will provide your contact information to participants as part of the handout materials. For more information about providing resource materials, contact Connie Byrd at [email protected], or Jodi Seitlin at [email protected].
• Sponsor our reception.
We are in need of a few sponsors for a reception to follow the program. Sponsors will have their names included on a display that will be visible throughout the program and during the reception. Sponsors who are not attending the program are invited to attend the reception to meet with other participants. Contact Connie Byrd at [email protected], or Jodi Seitlin at [email protected] for more information about sponsorship.
On behalf of The Jacksonville Bar Special Needs of Children Committee, we are excited to be bringing this panel of distinguished speakers to talk about this important topic. We hope you will decide to participate!
