As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this page that will each week chronicle the efforts of local nonprofit organizations. Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to submit news, announcements, success stories and any other information they believe would be of interest to our readers. Email to: [email protected].
We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they try to continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.
Alhambra’s ‘hair-raiser’ nets 114 ponytails for Locks of Love
To celebrate its recent show, “Hairspray,” the Alhambra Theatre & Dining hosted a hair donation event for Locks of Love on March 13. The community was invited to visit and donate their hair.
“If you told me we’d get 50 people to donate, I’d be thrilled,” said Alhambra Managing Partner Craig Smith.
“To get 114 pony tails is really a testimony to the caring of this community. I am awed by the support,” he said.
More than 30 stylists from the Riverside Hair Academy and Elite Look Productions cut hair and then styled the donor’s new look.
Volunteers collected and bagged the ponytails and the hair was sent to Locks of Love, where donated hair is used to make prosthetic wigs for children fighting illness or undergoing treatment.
In addition, the Alhambra donated 5 percent of the day’s ticket sales from both of its performances of “Hairspray.”
Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides vacuum-fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
The organization meets a need for children by using donated human hair to create high-quality hair prosthetics.
Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.
Others have suffered severe burns or injuries or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem or other dermatologic conditions that result in permanent hair loss.
The donors were cheered on by members of the Roar of the Jacksonville Jaguars as well as members of The Professional Cheerleaders Alumni Inc., a group of former Jaguars cheerleaders.
Breakfast and lunch was provided to volunteers and stylists and free sandwich cards were given to each donor by the Chick-fil-A at Hodges and Atlantic boulevards.
The event was turned into a party atmosphere when Celebrations Total Event Decorating brought in a truckload of balloons and decorations. FastSigns donated the banners along Beach Boulevard.
Publix customers boost Salvation Army’s programs
The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida has been awarded a check for $100,169 from Publix Super Markets for its hunger-serving programs.
The donation will be presented to the Salvation Army by Dwaine Stevens, Publix Jacksonville Division media and community relations manager, at a luncheon April 21 at Metropolitan Park.
The funds were donated during the holidays by Publix customers in an ongoing drive to support charities fighting hunger in the community.
“This generous donation will help us to provide groceries for thousands of struggling families right here on the First Coast,” said Maj. Dean Hinson, area commander for the Salvation Army in Northeast Florida.
“Publix shoppers are generously standing in the gap for those who run out of food before the next paycheck comes,” he said.
The Salvation Army in Northeast Florida distributed more than 26,000 supplemental grocery orders to those in need and provided nearly 340,000 meals for the homeless in 2010.
