• Dubbed “A Ferry Big Party,” the Ferry Fest to celebrate and raise awareness for the St. Johns River Ferry will be 1-9 p.m. Saturday at Mayport Village. Food trucks, live music and beverages will be among the entertainment and refreshments available. Efforts to raise funds and transfer the St. Johns River Ferry from the Jacksonville Port Authority to the City for continued service have been underway since February.
• Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Remer “Chip” Wilson to the Florida Independent Living Council Inc. Wilson, founder of ADA Consultants, was one of six such appointments and the only one from Northeast Florida.
• The 2012 graduates of the ATHENA Powerlink Program will be celebrated from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight Downtown at the Main Library. The graduates are Liz Grenamyer of Catering by Liz; Pam Gibson and Suzi Lemen of Dynamic Corporate Solutions; Gina Hall of GM Hill Engineering Inc.; and Nina Sickler of Landmark Engineering Inc. The program “links” a female business owner with a panel of unpaid advisers who work with her for one year to meet certain business goals and objectives. It is one of 29 such programs offered in the U.S. targets women-owned businesses at least two years old and beyond initial start-up difficulties.
• Crowley Maritime Corp. has purchased two $90 million Jones Act tankers, the “Florida” and “Pennsylvania” from Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA. They will be delivered in September 2012 and March 2013, respectively and marks Crowley’s re-entry into the Jones Act tanker market since its last was retired in 2011. The tankers will be capable of carrying almost 330,000 barrels of petroleum products and chemicals and operate in the U.S coastwise trade. The Jones Act regulates maritime commerce between U.S. cities and requires goods and passengers transported by water between port be done in U.S.-made ships, owned by U.S. citizens and crewed by U.S. citizens. It also provides sailors with additional rights.
• Marshall Gunn, president of Gunn & Company Investment Management was the guest speaker at the recent CPAlliance Leaders conference in Boston. Topics included professional ethics in the financial services industry and investment trends for high net worth individuals and retirees. The Jacksonville-based company is a wealth management and financial planning firm that currently manages approximately $85 million for individuals, businesses, retirement plans, foundations and trusts.
• 121 Financial Credit Union has relocated its Mandarin and Julington Creek area services to 12550 San Jose Blvd in Mandarin. The new location is a standalone facility 1.5 miles south of the former location in a commercial strip center.
• Mayor Alvin Brown will have a special role in the 30th Annual Senior Prom, “Glitz & Glamour” Friday evening: he’ll crown the prom king and queen. The 6-10 p.m. at the Osborn Center event is hosted each year by the City’s Senior Services Division and features dancing live entertainment. The king and queen will serve as yearlong ambassadors for senior center programs throughout the city. Tickets are $10 for attendees 60 years and older, $25 for attendees under 60.
