Drawing, painting, sculpting, firing, glazing and printing are some of the ways students enrolled in the Museum of Contemporary Art’s “artcamp@MOCA” are spending part of their summer vacations.
More than 400 young artists ages 4-17 will participate this year, said Lauren Spencer, MOCA public programs & tour coordinator.
The weeklong sessions, each devoted to a specific artistic discipline and age group, give camp participants the opportunity to learn about contemporary art and increase their visual vocabulary, she said.
“We get a great group of kids who are really interested in art,” said Spencer.
Art Camp is on break this week for the July 4 holiday. Classes resume Monday.
The museum offers half-day and full-day enrollment beginning each Monday through Aug. 13.
Next week, 4-6 year-olds will see “Stories Come to Life,” the 7-11 age group will explore the “Land of the Rising Sun” and the 12-17 group will be studying mixed media.
“Our big focus is exposure to art. The 4-6 age group is learning to hold a paintbrush; the older students are here to develop their skills. It’s educational, but art is fun by nature,” said Spencer.
Topics on the curriculum for the remainder of the summer include “Under the Sea,” “Starting with a Seed,” Wild, Wild West,” “Microspace,” “Teen Curators,” mural art and photography.
