Repair of leaky skylights and windows in the Main Library Downtown is scheduled to commence no later than May 20.
City Council on March 12 enacted legislation to appropriate $1.4 million from the Public Buildings Facilities Capital Maintenance Fund for testing, construction engineering services and contingency to eliminate continued water intrusion and address safety concerns associated with the Main Library’s skylights and stucco.
A building permit for the repair work was recorded May 1 to allow Jacksonville-based ACON Construction Co. Inc. to perform repairs at a cost of $1,105,400.
City Engineer Manager Tom Goldsbury said the repair work is scheduled to begin by May 20 and will be completed by Jan. 7.
All of the building’s skylights will be repaired along with windows on the north and east sides of the building.
Unsealed exterior masonry and stucco also will be repaired.
Goldsbury said he doesn’t expect there will be any significant disruption of library services while the repairs are under way.
The most disruptive period of the project will be closing the Grand Staircase near the Laura Street entrance during the skylight replacement because a scaffold will be required for that phase of the repair, he said.
