Evans joins Visit Jacksonville
Kim Evans has joined Visit Jacksonville as a partner sales manager. She will work with 400 partners of the tourism organization, along with engaging more businesses to participate in Visit Jacksonville's destination market and sales mission. Evans previously worked as a sales manager for the Omni and as a senior sales manager for SMG at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
575 attend annual NAACP dinner
The 48th Annual Freedom Funds Awards Dinner honoring local civil rights leaders drew 575 attendees Nov. 6 at the Hyatt Downtown. U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (middle) of Texas served as the event's keynote speaker. Bolles Middle School educator in Microsoft forum
Gloria Wood, a Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus technology integrator and computer teacher, was one of 27 U.S. educators to be named a Microsoft expert educator. She has been asked to participate in the computer giant's "Microsoft in Education Global Forum" in Barcelona, Spain, this March. The software giant selected Wood for her use of technology to drive project-based learning using robot design, science, technology, engineering, math and communication.
New center open at Edward Waters
Edward Waters College's new Center for Criminal Justice opened Tuesday with a ribbon cutting. The $2.6 million facility will house a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office substation, two classrooms and a forensics lab for EWC students. The 10,500-square-foot building is at 1767 Kings Road. It is the largest building expansion at the college since 2005. Public speaking tips by JCCI Forward
JCCI Forward will have its next Learning Lab on "How to Survive Public Speaking" from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at Three Layers Café in Springfield. The training is free and open to all, but RSVP at community.jcci.org. Afterward, there will be a Stay-N-Play event for socializing.
JTA announces safety campaign
The Jacksonville Transportation Authority has announced its "Think Safe" informational campaign, which focuses on passenger and community safety. Over the next several months, the campaign will have a series of messages through signage, banners, advertisements and announcements that emphasize safe traveling by the Skyway, on buses or while crossing streets. Stein Mart, University of Phoenix join for scholarships
Stein Mart and the University of Phoenix have partnered for a new scholarship program for employees of the Jacksonville-based retailer. The two scholarships for the 2013 season were provided to two California employees. In addition to the scholarship program, the school and company also work with the National Retail Federation to develop talent through education and career growth for those who work in retail.
'Small Business Saturday' Nov. 30 at RAM
The Riverside Arts Market and Community First Credit Union have partnered to encourage residents to "shop small" and support the local economy for the holiday season. As part of the effort, the market will host "Small Business Saturday" from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 30 for its weekly event under the Fuller Warren Bridge. More than 100 artists, craftsmen and food artists participate in the market each week. Also, the market will have gift tokens for sale.
