The Players raised a record $7.1 million for local charities at this year's tournament.
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem made the announcement Thursday night during a ceremony honoring the volunteer leadership of The Players. The total topped last year's record of $6.5 million.
The Players has given nearly $60 million to more than 300 Northeast Florida charities since the tournament moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977.
"It is a privilege each year to help celebrate the tremendous impact The Players championship has and will continue to have on improving the lives of our Northeast Florida neighbors, many of whom are children and youth," Finchem said. "The record amount generated in 2013 is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, and I'm pleased we were able to make the announcement tonight as part of their leadership celebration."
Volunteer Chairman Robert Davis was excited about the fundraising news announced during the celebration.
"For our volunteer leadership, tonight's announcement is so rewarding and something we will never forget, and we know it comes because of the tremendous support of the entire Northeast Florida community," he said.
Much of the $7.1 million generated from this year's tournament benefits local children's charities, in line with the event's committed goal to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over 10 years. The event is dedicated to making a significant financial impact on local nonprofits that promote youth education, health and wellness, and character development. To date, more than $17 million has been raised toward that goal.
The tournament returns to TPC Sawgrass May 8-11. For information, visit pgatour.com/theplayers.
