A new traveling exhibit opened Tuesday in the fourth-floor atrium at the Main Library. “African-American Military History: A Legacy of Honor and Valor” tells the story of the military history of African-Americans that began in 1528 with the first recorded visit of a black person to what would eventually become the United States. In 1866, the U.S. Army 9th and 10th Cavalry, units comprised solely of black soldiers, were formed and gained the nickname “Buffalo Soldiers.” The exhibit is focused on African-Americans’ participation in military and quasi-military actions since that time, including the Civil War, World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War. Guided tours presented by the local Buffalo Soldiers Historical Society Inc. may be reserved by visiting bshsjaxfl.com. The exhibit is open to the public through Oct. 28.
