The slogan for the Jacksonville Public Library is "Start here, go anywhere." Having a job is a good start no matter where you're going.
More than 200 people met prospective employers Tuesday at the Main Library's Community Resource and Career Fair.
"There are a lot of people looking for work and all the companies who are here are looking to hire people today. That was a stipulation," said Princess Evans, manager of workforce development at City Rescue Mission.
Companies seeking employees Tuesday were Baptist Health, the state Department of Children and Families, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the Hyatt and Omni hotels Downtown, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid Inc., JEA, Lowe's, Remedy Intelligent Staffing, Sears Logistics, Waffle House, Walmart, and Western and Southern Life Insurance Co.
The JAX Chamber and the U.S. Small Business Administration also staffed booths at the fair.
"There are so many things people need. It's not just a job, some people need help to start their own business," Evans said.
The fair was sponsored by Beaver Street Enterprise Center, Catholic Charities, City Rescue Mission, the Jacksonville Urban League, Jacksonville Public Library and WorkSource.
WorkSource is a state-funded resource for people looking for employment. Assistance with writing a resume, looking online for a job, interviewing skills and resources such as adult literacy are available year-round 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each Monday at the Main Library, said WorkSource representative Dwaine Sweet. Online-assisted job search is available 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each Friday, he said.
