Belk confirmed Friday that it will open a new store at northwest Atlantic and Kernan boulevards in 2015. Construction is scheduled to begin next July.
Jessica Graham, vice president of communications and community relations at the Charlotte, N.C.-based company, said Belk has not made any decisions about other store locations.
That would include the future of the store in Regency Square Mall, which is 3.3 miles from the Atlantic North shopping center where the new Belk will be built. Atlantic North currently is anchored by Academy Sports + Outdoors and LA Fitness.
The plans have raised questions about the future of Belk in the struggling Regency Square, which was one of the area's first regional malls when built in 1967.
Regency executives have not commented.
Site plans filed with the city show the Atlantic North Belk as a 95,000-square-foot store, about half the size of the 188,800-square-foot Belk at Regency.

Deutsche Bank tenant work at Butler Plaza at $500,000
An estimated $500,000 renovation project is under review for Deutsche Bank at the Butler Plaza III building in Southside, a few miles from the campus the bank occupies.
Gilbane Building Co. is shown as the contractor for the project on a building-permit application, which indicates tenant improvements of 60,000 square feet of the 80,000-square-foot, four-story building at 4875 Belfort Road.
The plans show a more specific build-out of almost 65,200 square feet – 9,054 square feet on the first floor and 18,708 square feet each on the second through fourth floors.

Deutsche Bank has been expanding in Jacksonville since it came to town in 2008, having chosen Jacksonville for a 1,000-job financial services operation and began leasing space in the Meridian Office Park at 5022 Gate Parkway.
In an incentives agreement approved early this year, Deutsche Bank promised to add more jobs and space at Meridian, boosting occupancy to at least 185,000 square feet and employment to about 1,600 jobs.
Meridian is a five-building office park comprising about 200,000 square feet, and Deutsche Bank has been absorbing much of the campus.
Correction
As stated above, Regency Square Mall was developed in 1967. The date in a story in Friday's Daily Record was incorrect because of a typographical error.
