Nominations sought for ‘Bank On My Dream’

Florida bankers are in the business of funding dreams, from helping Floridians purchase a car or home to starting a business or paying for college. Now, the Florida Bankers Association has launched a contest to grow awareness about the role bankers play called, “Bank On My Dream.”

Ten Floridians will have a $5,000 dream come true, compliments of the Florida Bankers Association and its member banks. To qualify, the dream must be nominated by a Florida nonprofit organization and must be attainable with the $5,000 cash prize.

“Bankers partner with Floridians to make their dreams come true every day,” said Alex Sanchez, president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association. “Sometimes, a small investment can have a big impact. This contest will demonstrate how $5,000 can make important dreams come true for 10 Floridians.”

Florida nonprofit organizations are invited to nominate residents they serve or who are known to them. The nonprofits must agree to use the funds to fulfill the dream. The dream may be anything from buying school supplies for foster children to building a website for someone starting a new business to buying a car so someone can have reliable transportation to get to work.

Nominations may be in the form of a narrative or a video, which may be submitted via the BankOnMyDream.com website. The public will vote on their favorite nominees. Afterward, a panel of judges will select two winners a week for five weeks, to be announced in June and July.

Summer jobs

available for students

Summer jobs for 84 job-ready Jacksonville young people are being sought by FreshMinistries for its Fresh Futures program.

“This is a great opportunity for prospective employers as well as for the kids,” said Michelle Harcourt, coordinator of the program. “These young people will be a valuable addition to a business for the summer because they have been attending job-readiness and personal enrichment training since October. They will bring a great work ethic to any job.”

Over the years, FreshMinistries has shepherded more than 600 youngsters through the program and guided them toward college and careers.

Students will work at a job site for five hours per day Monday-Thursday for the six-week duration of the program, which starts June 9. The students will be paid Florida minimum wage. FreshMinistries asks employers to cover half the students’ wages.

Harcourt said the prime interests of the students, who range in age from 15-19, are careers in information technology, medicine and engineering, but other fields are welcome to seek interns as well.

To obtain applications and learn about fee waivers, interested employers should contact Harcourt at [email protected] or (904) 854-6770.

FreshMinistries is a faith-based, nonprofit corporation established in 1989 with the goal of eradicating poverty through education, jobs and strengthening families.
