Already into the second month of 2014 and my tenure as your president, and I want to remind everyone of the exciting potential that exists for active members within this association.

I have experienced firsthand the many benefits of membership, and I challenge each of you to take advantage of these benefits: Networking, education, influencing industry issues, recognizing excellence and charitable outreach.

A big part of NEFBA is networking. To take advantage of this tremendous benefit, all you need to do is show up at one of the monthly socials, the NEFBA board meeting, the new-member luncheon, SMC breakfasts and various committee meetings.

Other opportunities cater to a variety of interests with events such as the fishing tournament and separate council meetings for Nassau, Clay and St. Johns counties and Wood, Young Professionals councils and the E-Council.

Education is a priority at NEFBA. We have our own apprenticeship program to help meet the growing industry demand for skilled construction trades people.

We have a student chapter to stay connected to our future leaders in UNF’s Construction Management program. In addition, NEFBA offers continuing education classes, new certification training and workshops on state-of-the-art energy efficiency processes, the economy, business practices and legal issues.

Our Government Affairs Committee is crucial to keeping us ahead of the issues affecting the industry, and we rely heavily on our Codes and Standards Committee, Industry Issues Fund, Crime Prevention Committee and Political Action Committee to protect and advance the industry and our members. You are encouraged to attend and make your voice heard.

Our annual Beast Feast Social has become a much-anticipated event to network with representatives of government agencies, politicians and other regional decision makers.

And, we are working to create a Florida specialty license plate for the building industry to raise money for addressing issues statewide.

Recognizing excellence among our members promotes successful individuals, companies, the association and the industry. Prime examples are the upcoming Laurel Awards to recognize top sales and marketing professionals; the spring Parade of Homes, an area open house that features the cream of the crop from NEFBA builders; and, later in the year, the Remodelers Awards showcase the year’s best residential and commercial remodels.

Builders Care is well known for its fight against substandard housing in the greater Jacksonville area. You can participate through donations, contributions and volunteer efforts to help the most vulnerable among our neighbors. Builders Care reflects the compassion and heart of NEFBA.

When you get involved, the return on investment is far greater than you expect. I know from personal experience.
