Builders Care Executive Director Justin Brown put out an email call for volunteers April 1:

“CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS. The Sheppards (aged 92 and 87) were informed by their insurance company that unless they repaint their home by mid-April, they will lose their homeowner insurance. Builders Care will be there on Saturday, April 1 at 9 a.m. Please join us and help us paint their home at 3337 Haines St, Jacksonville.”

Brown had received a call from Gloria Jenkins, Charlie and Lucille Sheppard’s daughter.

“Ms. Jenkins was very concerned about her parents,” Brown said. “She said her parents could not afford to have their home painted, and they were unable to do the work themselves. They were worried about losing their home insurance, maybe even their home. We considered this a critical home repair.”

Brown and the Builders Care team was joined at the site by volunteers, including many from the University of North Florida’s Construction Management program.

John Hasty, owner of Kitchen Design Gallery, was one of the volunteers.

“John had been active and participated with our volunteer work days when Builders Care was first created, and we were glad to see him back,” Brown said. “We also thank him for providing lunch for our volunteers.”

The volunteers and Builders Care staff scraped and painted the home. A carpenter replaced some of the rotting wood and the lattice around the foundation.

A follow-up inspection gave the home a thumbs-up, and the couple can rest easy about their homeowners insurance.

“I want to thank all the volunteers who helped us restore the home and the Sheppard’s peace of mind,” Brown said. “I’m also encouraged about the growth of our Caring Members participants who ensure we will be able to continue responding to emergency needs for some of our most vulnerable neighbors.”
