Winn-Dixie in Cedar Hills Shopping Center is becoming an Aldi discount grocer now that the city issued a permit Aug. 4 for the $1.45 million renovation.

W.H. Bass Inc. of Duluth, Georgia, is the contractor for the project to retrofit the store at 3538 Blanding Blvd. in West Jacksonville.

The 60,860-square-foot store will be divided into 25,785 square feet for Aldi and 35,075 square feet for a future tenant.

APD Engineering & Architecture PLLC of Victor, New York, is the architect and engineer.

The store was built in 1961.

In March 2024, German grocer Aldi bought Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers Inc., which operated about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

In February 2025, a new company, Southeastern Grocers LLC, bought back 170 stores from Aldi.

Aldi said it plans to convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027.

The U.S. headquarters for Aldi is in Batavia, Illinois.

There are 13 identified for conversion in Northeast Florida.

A February news release said Southeastern Grocers will continue to operate the remaining stores identified for conversion to Aldi until they are closed for the renovation.

Southeastern Grocers said the Cedar Hills store closed at the end of March.
