Aldi is doubling its store count in Northeast Florida with its conversion of the 13 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores it bought from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers.

Before the purchase, Aldi had 13 stores in the area.

It now is more than halfway – 14 stores open, a 15th due in weeks – toward that total of opening 26 stores.

The closures and openings are moving quickly, so it’s a challenge to keep up.

But so far, of the stores it bought, Aldi has opened two and another is scheduled to open this month.

Of the remaining 10, four more are identified to open by early next year.

Aldi Regional Vice President Matt Thon said in an emailed statement Aug. 6 that the company had plans for those openings by early 2026.

The timing of the remaining six has not been announced, although Aldi has said it would complete all of its systemwide conversions through 2027.

The Southeastern Grocers banners, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, generally have stores at least twice the size of Aldi.

Landlords typically downsize the space and offer the extra square footage for other tenants.

It appears that all of the 13 Southeastern Grocers stores bought by Aldi will close by Aug. 17.

The Eagle Harbor Winn-Dixie at 1545 County Road 220 has been converted into an Aldi.

Converted Aldi stores bought from SEG that are now open or open this month:

• Clay County: 1545 County Road 220, Fleming Island. Winn-Dixie closed in late January. Aldi opened June 26.

• Duval County: 2261 Edgewood Ave. W. in Northwest Jacksonville. Harveys Supermarket closed in mid-October 2024. Aldi opened March 20.

• Duval County: The Winn-Dixie at 8775 Old Kings Road S. in Brierwood closed in early February. Stores.Aldi.US shows it is projected to open Aug. 28.

Four more that Aldi says will open by early 2026:

Starting with 13

Aldi’s first 13 stores before the purchase comprised eight in Duval County; one in Nassau County in Yulee; two in St. Johns County in St. Augustine and Saint Johns; and two in Clay County in Middleburg and in Orange Park.

The first Northeast Florida Aldi opened in October 2014 in St. Augustine.

Almost a decade later, in March 2024, Aldi bought Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers Inc., which operated about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Aldi had about 2,400 U.S. stores and said the Southeastern Grocers acquisition was part of a plan to add 800 stores nationwide by 2028 through new openings and store conversions.

Aldi then started converting some stores to its banner.

A group led by former Southeastern Grocers LLC CEO Anthony Hucker bought 170 of stores back from Aldi this year and said it would continue to operate others targeted for an Aldi conversion until they close for the construction.

The U.S. headquarters for Germany-based Aldi is in Batavia, Illinois.
