A Missouri-based company that provides transportation for railroad crews filed a notice with state officials saying it is closing several facilities in Florida after losing a contract with CSX Corp., affecting 34 jobs in Jacksonville.
The letter sent Dec. 22 by Railcrew Xpress to the Florida Department of Commerce said Jacksonville-based CSX notified the company its contract has been canceled as of Feb. 27.
Besides closing the Jacksonville facility, Railcrew Xpress is closing five more Florida facilities that employ 48 people, the letter said.
North Kansas City-based Railcrew Xpress was founded in 2005 to streamline transportation for crews from train to train in the freight railway business, according to its website.
“This may seem odd to those who might wonder, why don’t the crew members just get on another train? The answer lies in the fact that the limited infrastructure for freight rail transportation is already overextended,” it said.
Railcrew Xpress said it has more than 2,000 employees in 25 states.
