Amkin Hogan LLC is adding at least 500 parking spaces to its 1,000-space Downtown parking garage at a job cost of almost $13.16 million.
The city issued a permit Oct. 3 for Finfrock Construction LLC of Apopka to make the addition on the 3.05-acre site.
The parking garage is at 301 W. Bay St. and the addition is at 298 W. Bay St.
The project expands the existing 10-tier parking garage with another 10-tier structure at the southeast quadrant of Bay and Pearl streets.
The addition will integrate traffic flow with the existing garage operations, not adding additional ingress or egress at grade.
It will be precast concrete with deep foundations.
The architect is Studio9 Architecture. Prosser | Prime AE is the civil engineer.
The existing 10-level, 1,000-space garage was built about 1987.
The precast concrete garage is designed at almost 164,000 square feet and is narrower than the first garage, which is about 311,640 square feet, plans show.
The existing garage will require improvements to integrate it with the new garage, plans show. It was constructed with concrete cast in place.
The addition is south of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority Skyway Central Station across from EverBank Center.
The permit was first sought in 2023. The Downtown Development Review Board approved the designs May 11, 2023.
Driver, McAfee, Hawthorne & Diebenow attorney Staci Rewis, who represented Amkin on the project, told the board the garage owner has “some future development plans” near the site but did not provide further details.
She said Amkin would be responsible for maintaining the landscaping, which includes greenery planted on the building’s facade.
Studio9 Architecture Principal and former review DDRB member Craig Davisson led the project design. He said the majority of the building will be off-white, precast concrete with a limestone-style finish.
He said the metal screening will be an off-blue metallic color.
