Last year marked a significant milestone for Three Rivers Legal Services as the organization, in partnership with several local agencies, hosted its first Sealing and Expungement Fair — a powerful step toward expanding access to justice and helping community members rebuild their lives.
The event drew 74 participants, each seeking clarity, opportunity and a second chance.
After careful review, more than 30 people were found eligible for sealing or expungement of their criminal history records, providing a meaningful path to employment, housing and stability.
For many, it was more than a legal service. It was the beginning of a fresh chapter.
Achieving such an impact required community commitment. Three Rivers was supported by 16 volunteer attorneys, including Jacksonville Bar Association members Melina Buncome, Hector Bustos, Alice Morris, Lisa Varon, and Vivian Williams, as well as nine non-attorney volunteers who collectively contributed 100 hours of service.
Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of collaboration that fuels our organization’s mission. Attorneys provided one-on-one legal guidance while non-attorney volunteers ensured a welcoming, organized and supportive environment for all who attended.
Beyond the numbers, the fair highlighted the power of collective action.
By bringing legal expertise, community partners and motivated volunteers, Three Rivers helped bridge gaps in access to justice that often prevent people from moving forward in their lives.
This inaugural event reflects what can be achieved when a community commits to fairness, opportunity and hope. It sets a foundation for future fairs and expanded outreach efforts in the years ahead.
As Three Rivers looks forward, the organization remains dedicated to empowering individuals, strengthening communities and advancing justice one person, one service hour, and one restored opportunity at a time.
