Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Jan. 14 the appointment of 1st District Court of Appeal Judge Adam Tanenbaum to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court of Florida.

“He will be a bold and fearless jurist,” DeSantis said in a news release.

Tanenbaum has served on the appellate bench since DeSantis appointed him in 2019.

Since joining the court, he has participated in more than 170 appellate opinions, including more than 90 majority opinions, and has written three of the court’s seven en banc opinions during his tenure.

An en banc opinion is one that is argued before all seven court justices.

Before his judicial service, Tanenbaum was general counsel for the state House of Representatives, general counsel for the Florida Department of State and Florida’s chief deputy solicitor general.

In addition to his judicial duties, the release said Tanenbaum contributes to the legal profession as an adjunct professor at Florida State University College of Law and as a frequent speaker and writer on constitutional and statutory construction and appellate practice.

He received a bachelor’s in political science from the University of Florida, where he was co-valedictorian, inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Florida Blue Key and the UF Hall of Fame. He received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

Tanenbaum succeeds former Justice Charles Canady, who retired to accept a tenured teaching position at the University of Florida.
