The Edward Waters College concert choir joined the Bethune-Cookman University choir for a joint performance of George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess.”

The choirs, accompanied by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, performed to a full house Saturday in the Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.

“I am extremely thankful that the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra invited us to be a part of this performance,” said Barbara McNeely-Bouie, choir director for Edward Waters College.

“I also feel extremely fortunate to be given an opportunity to be able to collaborate with Bethune-Cookman University.” The opera was first performed in New York City in 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers.

Visit Jacksonville takes home two marketing awards

Visit Jacksonville received two honors at the Interactive Media Awards.

The agency’s website, VisitJacksonville.com, was named “Best in Class” in the Travel and Tourism Website Design category. The website was redesigned in June by Tempest Interactive, making it more user-friendly and mobile responsive.

Visit Jacksonville also was selected as one of the top three Destination Marketing Organizations by Routes Americas. The award is judged by the airline network planning community. Jacksonville was up against the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (with a marketing budget of more $100 million) and The Nassau Paradise Island Promotion (with a marketing budget surpassing $10 million). Las Vegas won the award.

“That we, with a $4 million budget, are even able to be in the same category as such worldwide recognizable destinations is a huge honor and a true testament to the talent of our team in promoting Jacksonville as a premier tourism destination,” said Paul Astleford, president and CEO of Visit Jacksonville.
