The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront has partnered with the Boy Scouts of America North Florida Council for the group’s annual high-stakes fundraiser, Over the Edge.

The event has participants rappelling the 19-story Downtown hotel Friday and Saturday. Sponsors raise between $1,000 to $10,000 to participate in the tall task.

There is no age restriction, but participants must weigh at least 100 pounds. Space is limited to 80 people.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rappel down one of the most recognized buildings in the city, and the best part is that it is for a great cause,” said Michael Moore, Boy Scouts of America North Florida Council field director.

Last year’s event, pictured above, was at the EverBank Center.

Video about USS Adams receives awards

PRC Digital Media’s “Bring Home the Adams” video highlighting the future of the museum has received several honors.

It was awarded the Silver Reel in graphic/animation at the Media Communications Association’s International Media Festival. It also received two Awards of Distinction from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts.

“We created our visual effects to allow people to see what the dream will look like when it is realized,” said Ray Hays, PRC Digital president, in a news release. “The result is so seamless that many people have asked ‘When did they bring in the ship?’”

Hays produced and wrote the spot, which features U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, Mayor Alvin Brown and Sheriff John Rutherford.

The video can be seen on the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association’s website, ussadams.com. The group is spearheading the vessel coming Downtown. It was part of Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan’s vision for the waterfront Shipyards.

Nominations sought for city’s environmental awards

The city’s Environmental Protection Board is seeking nominations for its annual awards to be presented Aug. 14 at the University of North Florida Herbert University Center.

The keynote speaker will be Earl Benton, CEO of Champion Brands.

The awards are broken into three categories:

• The Charles E. Bennett Champion of the Environment Award, which recognizes individuals who have exhibited professionalism, diligence and commitment to the environment over a long period of time.

• The Christi P. Veleta Environmental Award, which honors a Duval County resident who has consistently promoted environmental education and outreach while exhibiting long-term environmental awareness.

• Environmental Achievement Awards, which comprise five categories: individual; public sector or educational institution; community or civic group; business with more than 50 employees and/or sales of more than $5 million; and small business with fewer than 50 employees and/or sales of $5 million or less.

For detailed criteria on each category along with nomination forms, email James Richardson at [email protected].

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. June 30. Judging will be done by the nine-member environmental board, which consists of industry, conservationists, professional engineers, the medical profession and general public. The board oversees and promotes enforcement and environmental regulations along with hosting hearings on the subject.

Crowley Maritime earns industry award

Crowley Maritime Corp.’s petroleum services division again is being honored by Marathon Petroleum Co. with its annual “Elite Vessel Award.”

The honor is given to tank vessel operators who demonstrate a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and operational excellence.

Crowley’s vessels chartered by MPC met a series of standards — including no Coast Guard-reportable injuries or incidents for the distinction. The company’s five vessels were recognized last year for the award, too.

Jacksonville-based Crowley Holdings Inc. is a holding company of the maritime corporation, and provides project solutions, energy and logistics services in domestic and international markets.
