Why did you become a judge?
Ever since law school I had it in my mind that I might want to be a judge one day. It’s a great way to perform a valuable public service. It’s a position that makes the most out of the talent I have. Although I like being an advocate, I also like being “neutral and detached,” and in a position where I can ascertain the law, apply it to the situation presented and reach a result that is legal, practical and just.

What should every lawyer know about appearing in your court?
Most importantly, be prepared and be professional. Other than the obvious things, like being on time, I do not really ask for more than that. Fortunately, most attorneys meet and exceed the standard. In terms of effective advocacy, I suggest listening to the judge’s questions and trying to answer them. Many attorneys already have in mind what they want to say, and are good at communicating that, but not as good at shifting gears to address the judge’s concerns.

What do you know now that you didn’t when you were practicing before the bench?
I knew the level of support here was good, but it is even better than expected. The level of professionalism is exceptional. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.

Community involvement?
Right now, it’s limited as I learn this new judicial role. I have been fortunate to have several jobs where work and community involvement come together, such as being an assistant general counsel with the General Counsel’s Office with the City of Jacksonville and being an assistant state attorney. As a judge, there are many opportunities for community involvement, such as speaking at Bar and other group functions and giving talks to school children. I’ve done some of that thus far, and plan to broaden my community involvement as I gain judicial experience.

What are your interests outside the courtroom?
I try to do some type of exercise almost every day. I actually enjoy it. Needless to say, I love spending time with my family. I feel way too young to say this, but the first grandchild is on the way. Since I went to Duke, I obviously love college basketball, but I liked it better last year than this year. I am also a big music fan (see below).

What was the last book you read or are reading?
“Chronicles, Volume One” by Bob Dylan. Those of you who attended my investiture know that to say I am a big Bob Dylan fan is a bit of an understatement. I have always been fascinated by his story. For me, it just keeps getting more interesting as he ages. He will be 70 this year. He is still making great music, although many people stopped paying much attention to him long ago. It’s interesting to see how someone can adjust from being heralded as the “voice of a generation” to being largely forgotten by present day society. Sadly, I think it is something we all experience on a much smaller level as we get older.
